Please Note: Froedtert Health has implemented a new security protocol which has resulted in the degradation of on-campus access to MCW Libraries' electronic resources. Users on the Froedtert network must sign in via OpenAthens when attempting to access electronic library resources (including UpToDate, VisualDx, etc.). MCW Libraries is aware of this change and is working to provide a permanent access solution. If you have MCW credentials, please sign in via MCW employees and students when prompted. If you are a Froedtert employee, click here to register for an OpenAthens account or view more information.

Research Impact Challenge

Challenge: Set up your ORCID profile

Why get an ORCID profile?

ORCID provides a persistent digital identifier (an ORCID iD) that you own and control, and that distinguishes you from every other researcher. An ORCID iD can:

  • provide name disambiguation if you have changed your name or the name on your publications vary (E Sanchez Smith, E Sanchez, ES Smith)
  • stay with you if you move to a different institution
  • track scholarly output
  • be linked to in your FCD profile

ORCID is increasingly required by funders and publishers, so the sooner you create your own ORCID, the better!

Example ORCID profile: https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8778-261X

Challenge tasks:

  1. Create your ORCID profile if you don't have one already. Note your ORCID iD so that you can later add it to your FCD profile. (Jump to instructions)
  2. Review, add, or update your information to make sure that it is current. (Jump to instructions)
  3. Review, add, or update your publications. (Jump to instructions)

1. Create an ORCID profile

When registering for an ORCID account, create a personal account as MCW does not have Institutional Access set up.

2. Add information to your ORCID profile

Once your ORCID iD is set up, populate your profile with information such as your employment, education, funding and memberships. Note that you can control the visibility of information on your profile.

3. Add publications to your ORCID profile

The following links provide instructions from ORCID on various ways to add publications, or works, to your ORCID profile.

  1. Add works by direct import from other systems to import links to your publications and other works to your ORCID record from other databases. This is the recommended process because it reduces or eliminates errors, and enables a reliable connection between your ORCID iD and your works

  2. Add works using an identifier

  3. Importing works from a BibTeX file

  4. Add works manually
